Sharwan’s Story

“I always saw children going to school but never dreamed that I would be amongst one of them.”

I was 7 years old when, I first got to know about KARYAVAHAK FOUNDATION from a DIDI whom I met in market while I was selling balloons with my father. My father has taken lot of loan, so he was into mental trauma, that how he will pay so much of loan. One day he met with an accident so he had to stop working, my mother has handled everything single handedly. She started selling balloons to support the family. Even I had to make money and used to sell balloons with my mother. Everyone in the neighborhood used to tease me because of my appearance. They use to never even call me by my birth name. I heard my name for the first time when I get along with the project of KARYAVAHAK FOUNDATION.

I was so shy and scared at first, it took them few weeks to counsel me and my family, before I finally dared to involve in their project EK NAYI SHURUWAT. EK NAYI SHURUWAT is a special project for the nomads that run by KARYAVAHAK FOUNDATION on the streets for children like me. I started to learn language skills and basic primary education. I couldn’t believe it – even though I had never been to school before, here I was learning.

EK NAYI SHURUWAT helped me to catch up so that I wouldn’t be bullied at school for being too far behind. It also taught me life skills, so as a result I stopped selling balloons because it was ruining my future. They even helped me to know about my child rights, something I would have never known, it was only possible because they arranged a special session with the government officials. After few month of being a part of EK NAYI SHURUWAT, I see myself a totally different person as I was earlier.

I have completed my basic education. I’m also a clear example to my fellow mates and now I make them understand why education is necessary for our wellbeing. The small boy with no name is now an example in his community.

Early childhood education is the key to the
betterment of society.
